From One Flu To Another?

Although often called ‘stomach flu’, the term flu is used to refer to illness from the Influenza virus. The stomach flu coming our way is caused by the Norovirus. It is our yearly unwelcome indicator that spring is coming.

This stomach flu is highly contagious as the virus can live on surfaces at least 12 hours, maybe up to 1 – 2 days and needs a bleach type cleaner to kill it. Alcohol based hand sanitizers we carry with us are not particularly effective in killing the virus. Prolonged washing of hands or potentially contaminated foods such as fruits and vegetables is best. Most importantly, keep your hands away from your mouth unless you have just washed them.

If you are unlucky enough to come in contact with this virus, it will usually take about 1 -2 days for symptoms to appear. Once you have caught it. you will be occupied by 1-2 days of diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal cramps. Your main effort then will be to maintain your hydration. Anything that is wet will do, as long as it does not contain alcohol or caffeine. Sports drinks with sugar and electrolytes are best. REMEMBER: It is most effective in small frequent sips.

Should you feel this springtime visitor is getting the better of you, you may be getting dehydrated. Here at AFC Urgent Care Cherrydale we have medicines which may decrease the vomiting and diarrhea, and if necessary, we may be able replace some of your fluids by an intravenous. No appointment is necessary; if you have any questions give us a call.

Stay tuned for next weeks topic.
